Sam continues his discussion with TV and Film Director and Producer, Murad Aldin Amayreh. In part one, they started the subject of "72 Virgins" and it's symbolism to the Islam faith. Many of Murad's films focus on the subject of Islam and being Muslim, so we decided to have an in depth conversation to better understand what it is to be Muslim in America. We hope that you will take some time to view some of his work on his YouTube channel at: http://youtube.com/muradaldin In Islam, the ḥūr or ḥūrÄ«yah (Arabic: Øورية‎) are described as "(splendid) companions of equal age (well-matched)", "lovely eyed", of "modest gaze", "voluptuous", "pure beings" or "companions pure" of paradise, denoting humans and jinn who enter paradise after being recreated anew in the hereafter. There are graphical descriptions of physical pleasures in heaven. Islam also has a strong mystical tradition which places these heavenly delights in the context of the ecstatic awareness of God. The houri have variously been described as being "chaste females", "restraining their glances", "modest gaze", "wide and beautiful/lovely eyes", "untouched / with hymen unbroken by sexual intercourse", "like pearls", "virgins", "voluptuous/full-breasted", "with large, round breasts which are not inclined to hang", "companions of equal age", "non-menstruating/urinating/defecating and childfree", "60 cubits [27.5 meters] tall", "7 cubits [3.2 meters] in width", "transparent to the marrow of their bones", "eternally young", "hairless except the eye brows and the head", "pure", "beautiful", "white", "splendid" and much more besides. A Muslim (Arabic: مسلم‎) is an adherent of the religion of Islam. The feminine form of 'Muslim' is Muslimah (Arabic: مسلمة‎). Literally, the word means "one who submits to God". The word "Muslim" is the participle of the same verb of which "Islam" is the infinitive. Muslims believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah. Muslims believe that Islam existed long before Muhammad and that the religion had evolved with time from the time of Adam till the time of Muhammad, and was completed with the revelation of verse 3 of Surah Al-Maeda" "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." The Qur'an describes many Biblical prophets and messengers as Muslim: Adam, Noah (Arabic: Nuh), Moses (Arabic: Musa) and Jesus (Arabic: Isa) and his apostles. The Qur'an states that these men were Muslims because they submitted to God, preached his message and upheld his values. Thus, in Surah 3:52 of the Qur'an, Jesus' disciples tell Jesus: "do thou bear witness that we are Muslims". Muslims pray five times a day; these five prayers are known as Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. There is also a special Friday prayer called Jumu'ah. Most Muslims accept as a Muslim anyone who has publicly pronounced the Shahadah, which states, "There is none worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His Messenger." Currently, there are an estimated 1.4 billion Muslims, making it the second largest religion in the world. -------------------------------------- Sam Harris WAR ON WAR Music Video Contest! http://www.WarOnWar.INFO Over $6000 in CASH and PRIZES! Jun 7, 2008 - First, Why are you trying to defend the terrorists? And second, there are hate crimes against gays in this country, however, most of these crime are isolated and the attackers act alone and not as a large group in the name of an entire widespread and established religion. So my argument is you're not comparing oranges with oranges. I don't understand why so many attack the Christian/Judeo religion calling it evil but then do all they can to defend the extremist sect of the Muslim religion.

Jun 7, 2008 - hi vlpresl, one more thing.. the cults to mentioned committed mass suicides and did not go out to kill others who were not of their relgion. ok well it's hard to get people to change their minds when it comes to religion and politics. but I will say I'm glad we can have this discussion. Peace.
VLPRESL Says:
Jun 7, 2008 - i can't tolerate violence toward anyone, period. i would never defend terrorists. i'm just saying that we can't put all the violence in this world on one religion. i wouldn't attack the christian religion either since i consider myself one. whether we're christian, muslim, jewish, or mormon, we can't judge a person by his religion, and this is what a lot of good and decent muslim people have to go through. but defend terrorists? NEVER.
luvlac64 Says:
Jun 7, 2008 - Then we agree more than we disagree. :)
VLPRESL Says:
Jun 7, 2008 - no, you are right. they didn't. but... i don't think the families of these people who took there lives due to a religios belief would care to consider how many people were actually persuaded by there religious leaders to take their own lives. they lost their loved ones. in any case, i am glad we had this discussion as well.xoxo-vicki

Jun 7, 2008 - Rock on girl! I agree, the being or energy we call God loves, honors, and values all :) I also agree that its our actions that make us decent and good, vs. our beliefs. We are at our best when those two things are one in the same :) Be Blessed, Kel

bigcherry99 Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - ok guys, murad's explanation of the veil was retarded. murad's saying that islam believe some men can't control themselves....and the answer is to veil women from head to toe! how can Sam sit there are tolerate this immoral repressing anti-woman ideology? its like feminism never happened.
bigcherry99 Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - sam - perhaps this little islamic tit bit will get yr attention? homophobia is punishable by death in 7 countries. every single one of those countries is islamic! doesn't that bother you? how long are you going to keep apologizing for islam? you don't owe islam anything. stop apologizing for it it veils women, executes gays and imprisons (or kills) those who criticize it.
SamHarrisCOM Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - My aim in these interviews, whether they are with celebs or this one, which is religious/political, is to engage in a FRIEND Friday where I bring up points of interest (in my opinion) and have CONVERSATION with them. YOU get to choose what you think, are entertained by, taught by, or disagree with. I should have brought up homosexuality - it's an obvious point. I had no idea this was going to be 3 parts so I as trying to keep it broad - affecting the most people. Next time.....
bigcherry99 Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - sam-i have no criticism of u. i actually think ur a pretty decent interviewer + i think u achieved what u set out to achieve w/ this interview, so good for you however, islam is a very serious topic and, although you were quite entitled to approach it from a lighter POV, i know you understand that some folk can't take it lightly islamic countries have very bad human rights records + the koran has WAY TOO MANY verses endorsing terrorism which we can see being acted upon daily. big problem!
SamHarrisCOM Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - bigcherry - I never took it lightly. This man made a great video called "I Am A Muslim" which was very serious and also very funny and human and real. It was with this spirit that I approached the interview. I found Murad's personal story an American one. He was honest, true and insightful. He has a sense of humor. Which is key if ANY of us are to see outside of ourselves and our limited worlds. BC - while passionate, you have retain the decorum of a passionate debate. thank you for that! Sam

Jun 11, 2008 - verrry interesting... don't know that much about islam /judo-christian upbringing kept me pretty much with blinders on. I'm open to learning these days which seems to be nothing more than a modern day miracle in my life.
LailaMujahidah Says:
Jun 24, 2008 - 72 virgins thing is a fake. women r not lower men and women r = by islam. if they arent in countries around the world then its the countries fault not islam. to be attractive for their husband only. mmm i think this could have been done better.
bello101 Says:
Jul 23, 2008 - Look up "american converts", def think you will find it interesting =)
MissMidoria Says:
Jul 29, 2008 - "Homophobia" is punishable by death?? So it's illegal to be afraid of gays in Islamic countries??
peaceoutpeople Says:
Oct 30, 2008 - Koran has too many verses endorsing terrorism???sigh...have you ever read it or you just saying it becuase you heard it on fox?
peaceoutpeople Says:
Oct 30, 2008 - Up until yesterday you rednecks were condoning slavery and keeping the womenfolk in line, and now you want to talk about equality? I dont see the bible or the right wing conseratives loving the black or homosexuals. You my friend are a full of hypocrisy. Yes there are issues in the islamic world, but why dont you get your house in order before you start criticizing others.

Jun 7, 2008 - luvlac, i was replying on your comment about there being a dangerous sect in this religion. i was just trying to say that there are dangerous sects in many religions. i also forgot to mention that there are many hate crimes toward gay men and women, right here in our own country. these things cannot be put on one sect of religion or people. timothy mcveigh wasn't muslim.
