Today Sam talks with TV and Film Director and Producer, Murad Aldin Amayreh. Many of Murad's films focus on the subject of Islam and being Muslim, so we decided to have an in depth conversation to better understand what it is to be Muslim in America. We hope that you will take some time to view some of his work on his YouTube channel at: http://youtube.com/muradaldin I AM A MUSLIM! http://youtube.com/watch?v=JQXh20OuhIc A Muslim (Arabic: مسلم) is an adherent of the religion of Islam. The feminine form of 'Muslim' is Muslimah (Arabic: مسلمة). Literally, the word means "one who submits to God". The word "Muslim" is the participle of the same verb of which "Islam" is the infinitive. Muslims believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah. Muslims believe that Islam existed long before Muhammad and that the religion had evolved with time from the time of Adam till the time of Muhammad, and was completed with the revelation of verse 3 of Surah Al-Maeda" "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." The Qur'an describes many Biblical prophets and messengers as Muslim: Adam, Noah (Arabic: Nuh), Moses (Arabic: Musa) and Jesus (Arabic: Isa) and his apostles. The Qur'an states that these men were Muslims because they submitted to God, preached his message and upheld his values. Thus, in Surah 3:52 of the Qur'an, Jesus' disciples tell Jesus: "do thou bear witness that we are Muslims". Muslims pray five times a day; these five prayers are known as Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. There is also a special Friday prayer called Jumu'ah. Most Muslims accept as a Muslim anyone who has publicly pronounced the Shahadah, which states, "There is none worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His Messenger." Currently, there are an estimated 1.4 billion Muslims, making it the second largest religion in the world. Islam (Arabic: الإسلام; al-'islām (help·info)) is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a seventh century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits [to God]". There are between 1 billion to 1.8 billion Muslims, making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, after Christianity. Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, God's final prophet, and regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Islamic tradition holds that Jews and Christians distorted the revelations God gave to these prophets by either altering the text, introducing a false interpretation, or both. Islam includes many religious practices. Adherents are generally required to observe the Five Pillars of Islam, which are five duties that unite Muslims into a community. In addition to the Five Pillars, Islamic law (sharia) has developed a tradition of rulings that touch on virtually all aspects of life and society. This tradition encompasses everything from practical matters like dietary laws and banking to warfare and welfare. Almost all Muslims belong to one of two major denominations, the Sunni (85%) and Shi'a (15%). The schism developed in the late 7th century following disagreements over the religious and political leadership of the Muslim community. Islam is the predominant religion throughout the Middle East, as well as in major parts of Africa and Asia. Large communities are also found in China, the Balkan Peninsula in Eastern Europe and Russia. About 20% of Muslims live in Arab countries, 30% in the Indian subcontinent and 15.6% in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country by population. -------------------------------------- WAR ON WAR Music Video Contest! http://www.WarOnWar.INFO Over $6000 in CASH and PRIZES! Jun 8, 2008 - inflammatory? That choice that you are making, in and of itself, I disagree with. Again, the overall message of the Koran is one of peace. As others have pointed out, the violent people acting on behalf of their religion are not representative of the religion as a whole. I have relatives in Belfast. They know people who have been injured/killed in the name of Christianity because of how they choose to interpret the bible. That isn't necessarily a reflection of the bible, but humanity. Sam...

Jun 8, 2008 - ...Sam just answered your post here as well as EmpSan. I don't know how to say it any differently than they have, or that I have earlier. Simply put, would you not befriend someone who is Muslim because of these statements in the Koran? Perhaps they are moderate and peaceful people. You choosing to focus on those quotes would prevent you from knowing someone who might actually help you to grow as a person. Thanks again for your time. I hope I've helped you as you've helped me.

Jun 8, 2008 - WCDUKE-I appreciate you are not familiar with the koran, but then on what basis do you claim that "We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve" needs to be contextualized? if you know of a context that needs to be applied to this then please enlighten us! otherwise, this is a pretty clear instruction from Allah to Muslims to 'cast terror' I focus on the Koran because muslims are commiting a global epidemic of terrorism unrivalled by any other religion or group.
wcduke Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - I get your point that I do not need to be familiar with the Koran because those quotes don't need context, in your view. I get it. Myself and others have responded to you very directly, IMO, yet you choose to avoid some questions I ask of you. I'm not going to repeat them, go back and read again, please. Some people would say that GWB is a terrorist. I happen to agree. He is a war criminal who is responsible for many more deaths than all of those combined since 9-11-01. Why is your focus not...
wcduke Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - on him, and/or Christianity?
bigcherry99 Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - sorry i missed any of yr questions. i didn't mean to dodge. my wife is muslim, so no, i'm not hostile to muslims just because of the contents of the koran. yes, you could agree that GWB is a war criminal, but he cannot point to the US constitution to justify his actions. terrorists can easily use the koran to justify their actions. the koran instructs terror and violence against non-muslims.
bigcherry99 Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - i don't support george bush or christians. i think both are a threat to society, but the topic of the video is Islam. that is why my comments focus on islam if the video was about george bush i would focus my comments on george bush. like i said, i feel islam is a massive threat to global society and muslims are conducting a multi faceted war against the west including a terrorism epidemic which no other group can match. terrorists get their instruction from koranic text.
wcduke Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - I know the topic of the video. Myself and others introduced Christianity and GWB as a way to make a point. My point (once again) is that it is about context. Not in response to the quotes from the Koran, but context in your choice of how to view Islam on the whole. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and if you are to take such a strong view of Islam based on a few quotes in what is overall a message of peace, then you should use that same scrutiny when considering the bible and how thousands of...
wcduke Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - ...thousands of Christians, even to this day, have killed in the name of Christianity, including GWB.
bigcherry99 Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - it doesn't matter how much of a threat GWB + Christianity are, it doesn't change the fact that islam is a threat and terrorists take their instruction from the koran. are you saying that i shouldn't worry about islam because GWB + christianity are a threat too? hahahaa that's ridiculous! as for yr claim that islam's overall message is peace, please read these quotes endorsing slavery, mysogyny, racism against jews and violence against non-muslims. p.s. u are a good debater.

Jun 8, 2008 - wcduke: I like your points. I do not think God should be categorized or limited as you say to the labels of religion. The Mos Def quote is a great one as well. I think people come to God on their own terms, whether they chose to be Christian in a traditional sense or something more personal without organized religion or they chose to not believe in God at all and be atheist or agnostic or something. Thanks for replying.

wcduke Says:
Jun 8, 2008 - Thank you. I don't know about you, but I actually enjoy this kind of conversation. It is refreshing that, for the most part (there's a jerk who lurks in Sam's area here on YouTube) people are respectful of others and their beliefs, which is why Sam posted this series of videos. Peace to you.

Jun 11, 2008 - you should of asked about beslan where muslims slaughtered 186 school children. no other religion is doing anything like this. why do muslims behave this way? is it anything to with the koran telling muslims to commit terror in the name of islam?
meandu55 Says:
Jun 13, 2008 - What happened in Beslan was sad but they did it as a revenge for CHECHENYA , unfortunately they used Islam name to gain some support from Muslims but that didn't work because we against this kind of inhuman acts. Our Prophet ( Muhammad PUH)said nobody kills children , women and elderly . If you Knew this before You would know that act wasn't Islamic.
greekmuslimgirl Says:
Jul 14, 2008 - Very good video!! There were some points that should be clarifed though (in my next post).
greekmuslimgirl Says:
Jul 16, 2008 - 1) Yes, peace is embeded in the meaning of the word Islam but the main meaning means submission, surrender, obedience, sincerity and peace 2) The consensus of scholars declare that the Nation of Islam is NOT part of Islam based on what they preach although the do share some secondary issues of similiarity 3) The main message of all prophets is that there is no deity worthy of worship except the Creator, God (although what you mentioned is also true)
Nawas7 Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - Terrorists hijacked Islam before they did with any airplane. Blaming Islam is like blaming Boeing for building commercial planes which killed innocent people!
Budguy68 Says:
Aug 15, 2008 - We aint blaming islam, we are blaimg radical islam. U know, idiots who believing in stoning adulterers, homosexuals, blasphemers and infidels? sharia law is all evil bullshit.
Chibling Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - The thing is that the people who are 'extremists' are actually following their holy text more faithfully than the moderates. Moderates ignore aspects of their faith, or are ignorant of aspects of their faith. I prefer moderates since they tend to include more secular morality and science. However, the moderate's position of fence sitting or having their cake and eating it too, it not a defensible or respectable position intellectually.

Jun 8, 2008 - I cannot answer your question specifically because, as I mentioned earlier, I am not familiar with the Koran. So to attempt to answer it based on what you have written here would be unfair to the Islam religion. But if you are accurate in your quotes of the Koran, I would say you are right. Myself and others have already written that in previous posts. So the question for me again is, why do you choose to focus on this when Christianity and other religions contain statements which are just as...
